Award-winning documentaries connecting people, research and life.
Wherever there are people, there are stories to be told. Whether in the humanities, attempting to understand our place in the world, the sciences teasing apart the fabric of existence, or the limitless world of the arts. A former scientist myself, my passion is to work with you to tell those stories – from idea development to filming, editing, branding and final delivery for your chosen platform.
Specialising in short, observational films, often with a focus on research, health and society, the films I make with clients aim for a distinctly human feel - a sense that the people at the heart of the story are at least as important, interesting and inspiring as the work they do. From the moment we start, I’m committed to making your film the best it can be within an agreed timeframe. |
After interviewing Sir David Attenborough, he indicated he was surprised that I was doing everything alone, at which point I explained why I thought it could often get better results. His response, "Often, one man bands play the best tunes!"
Preproduction
Sometimes a client has a very clear idea of what they would like - a clear brief - and that’s great. My job is to bring it to life. And sometimes a client has a general idea but is looking for some kind of creative input, a little pre-production. If that’s the case, great - I love developing ideas and have years of experience working in the world of research, turning rough ideas into visual stories with impact.
Filming
Most films are shot over the course of a day or two, so I offer a day rate for filming, with equipment included - no additional fees for rental. I’m an experienced ‘run and gun’ filmmaker, so always do what I can to creatively maximise an environment for filming - I often think of interviews as the vital bones of a film with all the wonderful, contextual action footage being the necessary muscle! As an experienced one-person unit, my approach to filmmaking has always been highly collaborative and nimble. A key strength of this approach is that it often allows for a more intimate and informal interview setting, a factor often commented on in the resulting films, as it allows an interviewee to relax and let their personality shine.
Editing and delivery
Then we enter the exciting edit phase where your film takes form. Editing is not alchemy but doing it well is an art, demanding a keen eye and ear for detail, nuance, the emotional landscape, pacing and feel. For editing, I have a separate day rate – and I am available to discuss edit-only jobs. Depending on the length and complexity of the film, this phase usually takes between four and six days for a short film.
The first time you see your film is an incredibly exciting moment. This is why, when you do first see it, it will look polished, having been colour graded to look its best, with an appropriate music track and supplied graphics and logos in place. Then, once any revisions have been made, the video file will be subtitled and delivered to you in any file type you require.
If you have an idea for a film, no matter how early stage, it'd be great to hear from you at barryjgibb@icloud.com
